Top 20 Referring Sites in the RPG Bloggers Network
Greetings everyone! Danny here, one of the founding members behind the RPGBN, recently I’ve had a few requests for some sort of list of the “Top 20″ blogs in the RPG Bloggers Network. Unfortunately we don’t currently have a good metric for which sites get the most clicks from it, but what I do have easy access to is the top sites that refer traffic to the Network. These numbers are from January 1st, 2009 until yesterday, and though they may be slightly off I gave checked the top 200 referring listings a few times to make sure they’re as accurate as possible. Some sites have multiple entries for one reason or another, but I’ve combined them to try and give credit where it is due.
First, I will say that the Network appears to get 45% of its traffic directly (which is spectacular), and 15% of its traffic is from Google, so even the highest blogs on this list are individually referring less than 5% of the Network’s total traffic. That means this is not really a good metric for the “most popular” blogs on the network, but it does show us which members are contributing the most by referring readers to the network itself, though banner/link placement has a big impact on this so it should not be taken as a comprehensive metric for which blogs get more traffic in general. An additional note is that this list only includes sites that are actually members of the network and that are currently active.
So, as requested, here is a list of the sites that send the most hits to the network (thus helping us all)!
- Critical Hits
- Musings of the Chatty DM
- RPGblog 2
- The Spirits of Eden
- Jeff Rients Gameblog
- kellri.blogspot.com
- Dungeon Mastering
- Tales of the Rambling Bumblers

Wow, I’m actually surprised that I’m in that last. More than happy to drive traffic to the network.
What can I say, I should have re-read before I submitted. My last comment should have read.

Interesting stats. I know that I open the RPGbloggers site at least twice a day from a bookmark (“direct traffic”).
I’ve only been on the network for a few months so far. Direct links from the network accounts for just over 20% of my readership at this point, usually about 30-35 clickthroughs per day.
Further, I credit the network with a lot of my direct traffic now. About 60% of my traffic is “direct traffic”, but the total traffic has climbed nicely ever since I joined the network.
I get about 240 hits a day currently – 20% from the network, 5% from google reader, 4% from google searches, 11% from other blogs, forums and websites.
Wow! I had no idea I sent that many folks here–but I’m sure glad I do!
whoah, I had no idea…
I feel relieved that two of the founding blogs are in the top 2
Awesome work…
Hey, aren’t we turning one soon?
Holy crap, how did I get to #4?
Here’s my theory – my blog is so terrible, people are like “EGADS WHAT AM I DOING HERE” and they immediately click my RPGBN link to get away.
That’s the only explanation I can fathom.
Purple Pawn received 310 visits in the past month referred by the RPG Bloggers Network. Only 45% were new visits, though. From this I infer that many people (at least in regards to our site, which is a bit different), are using the network as a screening tool instead of visiting or subscribing to our site directly. Nevertheless, joining the RPG Bloggers Network has been a great benefit to Purple Pawn and I look forward to another very successful year.
Hi!
You said that doesnt have a tool to mesure the access, here in Brazil we use the Alexa’s data to make a rank. We called it as PopRank, and we have a program which makes the rank automatically. Take a look http://www.paragons.com.br/pop-rank/
Maybe there at Usa you could use same tool to.

I hang my head in shame at not making the top 20…
Trask, The Last Tyromancer
I am happy to see I made the top twenty, even if only at number fourteen.
I have been very happy with the attention RPGBloggers has brought to my humble blog, so I am glad that I am giving something back.
I would like to take the time here to thank the founders and everyone else blogging here for making RPGBloggers such a great resource for people with an interest in RPGs.
whoah, I had no idea…
Another person surprised to be in there. I think having the biggest button right at the top does it for me.
This list is really useful for me to fill in some more RPG blogs to follow!
@Trask: All you needed to do was refer 8 more people over the course of 6 months.
The numbers ranged from a max of around 2,000 down to right at 300 referrals. Metrics like this are something I love to look at, so I really enjoyed putting the list together.
We joined the network near the end of February so it’s nice to see us in the top 20. 15% of our traffic is from the network, so it’s nice to know we are contributing back.
