Warning: Contents Under Pressure And Considered Extremely Awesome

One of the things I heard about going into Gencon was this odd little item that contained mostly stuff that I owned. It was announced over at Pinnacle that they would have a show-exclusive item, the Savage Worlds Starter Kit. For some reason, I really needed the darn thing. Maybe it was the fact that it was in extremely limited supplies and only available at Gencon. Maybe it was that it included a fresh copy of the Explorer's Edition of the rules (mine's seen better days) amongst tons of other stuff. Or maybe (definitely) it was the fact that you got everything for a mere twenty bucks.

Keep Reading to see what's in the box!

From Left to Right: Awesome Things

So what do you get in the starter? First, and this might sound a little nerdy, but you get a nifty Savage Worlds box to keep all your stuff in. I think this may be the first (but hopefully not the last!) Savage Worlds box set every released. SW is a game that can benefit from lots of little bits and pieces, so now I'm psyched that I have a box to transport all my stuff in to TheBro's house or conventions where I can GM much easier just by grabbing my box and throwing it in my bag. Could I use a shoebox? Of course. Would it be as styling or awesome? Of course not.

Once you open the box, you get to see what kind of value is really packed into this small (but stylish) box: 1 copy of the SW Explorer's Edition (all the rules you need to play the game!), 1 SW Oversize Action Deck (a $20.00 value alone, more on this below), 2 bags of tiny poker chips perfect for handing out Bennies (story, fate, etc. points) to your players or mark different kinds of schmucks for your heroes to kill, 1 set of RPG dice, 1 Q-Workshop Deadlands d6 for your WildCard rolls, and 2 sheets of blast templates. Let's take a look at these items piece by piece.

What more do you need? Nothing, that's what!

I'm going to skip over the SW Explorer's Edition at this point since this is not a review of the SW system itself. If you've never heard of SW, go to Pinnacle's website, download the quick start rules and a one-sheet to play with your friends, and come back. Basically, SW is a crunchy game that uses mini's and is universal - you can play any setting or intellectual property you want with it. There are tons of settings out there to explore; we've been playing the Day After Ragnarok.

So, now that we have that out of the way, I'll just comment that I like the new printing of the Explorer's Edition. I have an older printing that feels a little more like a magazine cover. This new one (which I believe TheBro also has) feels more like a trade paperback in that it's a thicker stock with a better laminated feel to it. Very nice quality for such a cheap book ($10.00 at retail on its own). You can also see the blast templates in the picture to the above right there (they're the big orange firey shapes on those pieces of cardstock). Of course no one needs to buy templates, but who likes making them anyway? These are the similar feel to the cover of the Explorer's Edition and will promptly be used in our next session, just cause I've got 'em.

Bennies!

A Nice Set of Dice

Some of the other nice things they threw in include the standard set of dice + Q-Workshop Deadlands d6 (all players get to roll an extra d6 with their rolls as a kind of bonus for being awesome, so it's nice you get two d6's in the set) and the mini poker chips to use for bennies. You get red, white, and blue tokens, which, is nice even if we don't need three different colors for these. The dice are nice, discreet black marble. They've got a classic look and make for a good starter set for any new role player. Using our dice rating system (feel, aesthetic appeal, and readability), this set of dice ranks very well in all three. I'd be proud to pass these off to a new or experienced player a like. I've talked at length about how much we love Q-Workshop dice, and the Deadlands d6 included is no exception. The whole box set combines a safari pulp feel with a poker and card game theme. It makes it feel like SW is the game Indiana Jones would play.

My Initiative Deck Has Leveled Up.

Did I mention card playing? SW uses a unique mechanic to determine initiative in an encounter. Instead of everyone rolling up their d20 and adding dexterity or what-have-you, SW has the GM deal one card to each player and monster from a standard deck of playing cards. There are some powers that let you get a boost on your initiative, but generally speaking, characters who aren't rogues or rangers aren't screwed on initiative, and that's pretty cool. I've been using a deck of cards with the UW-Wisconsin red W on the back for this purpose. While it's chock full of school pride (Go Badgers!), it's not exactly flavorful or immersive.

That's the face I make when dealing initiative cards to my players.

Enter the Oversized Action Deck. While technically speaking, this is just another deck of 52 cards + 2 Jokers, but it adds spice regardless of the genre you're playing. The cards themselves are obviously oversized (see the comparison pic to the right here for the card next to a standard d6). Each suit of cards have a different theme for the face cards. See the pictures at the end of the article for each of the themes covered. These cards, as mentioned above, retail for $20.00, and I've been looking at them for a while. Knowing these were in the starter really sealed the deal for me.

I don't regret a single aspect of the starter. You couldn't of really gotten more bang for your buck in the exhibitor's hall at Gencon (although at $40.00, DC Adventures comes awfully close, but more on that in a future review of that amazing Supers game). I really hope this boxset sees a wider release in the future, but doubt it considering how much this may cost Pinnacle to produce. If they threw a small book of one-sheet adventures in, I could see this bumped up to $30.00 and be just an amazing starter set for anyone to try out SW. We'll have to see what the future holds given that SW seems to only be expanding into more and more markets.

Modern Horror!

Fantasy!

Pulp Adventure!

SpacePunk Opera!

Many people show off their swag piles and purchases after Gen Con, but I’m going to tell you about the ones that got away.

Although I was able to pick up more at Gen Con than I’d ever dreamed just a month ago, there were a few items that eluded my grasp (again, in some cases). Be it price, availability, or timing, below are some of the products that I left Gen Con without:

-Kingdoms of Legend Series, Interaction Point Games: These guys had a beautiful map of their alt-history/fantasy Pathfinder setting, along with the basic setting primer and a supplement for naval combat. All were around $12, but by the time I was ready to pull the trigger, I had enough left for parking and the Gamescience jumbo d4 I needed. I heard they will soon be in distro channels (they even talked to the guy from my FLGS!), so I’m reasonably certain I can grab it from them in just a bit.

-Hirst Model Arts Molds: Every year, my friends and I talk about pooling our money and buying several of these molds. Every year, we see our dreams crushed, as for some reason or other we fail to do so. I think I will bring it up again in a month.

-Starships, Rogue Games: Along with a map of Colonial Boston, I really wanted to snag this from the Rogue Games booth. Again, it came down to budget, and the expectation I will be able to grab it rather soon. Getting to chat with the author, Greg Videll, and the positive reactions from my friends that did pick it up is enough to cement this for me.

-Savage Worlds Boxed Set, Pinnacle Entertainment: Pinnacle could not keep these in stock. I’m pretty happy with my current selection I have with SavWo, but I was thinking it would have been a nice gift for a couple of friends, or great convention prize.

-Geek Chic “Sultan” Gaming Table: Maybe some day…

We're starting playing RPGs again this week - and I for one can't wait! It seems I've been handed the reins, although Dave has FantasyCraft ready to roll "whenever," but I've been struck by a thought:

My group likes crunch. We love rules, and stats, and rolling on tables. This may well be why the rules-light games (PDQ# etc) we've played have tailed off. I think this could also be why people don't seem too keen on Savage Worlds...

I also love crunch - I can't help it. I thoroughly enjoyed the crunchiness of 4e DnD, the character twinking and the tactical combat. And I'm planning on running Mouse/Realm Guard tomorrow, which is not crunchy - it's not meant to be offensive, but Guard is definitely a fluffy game. I know people aren't going to like it. But sod it.

I want to run something to get back into the swing - to get the ball rolling again. Guard's low prep, and I want to see how the mechanics work out. We can play for a few sessions and then dive into FantasyCraft, or whatever, and then play something else. Something nice and crunchy. I like the idea of everyone running their own game for a few sessions, a four week (or whatever) mini adventure path - one of the things that broke the DnD experience for me was that we changed DMs but kept the characters and narrative running, in hindsight that was a pretty bad idea...

So: We'll play Guard for a couple of weeks - Dave's not here next week, so no point in starting FantasyCraft now - and then when I get rotated back in to DM, we can switch to one of:

+ Savage Worlds, in the Deadlands setting - the one I've been running previously. I like the setting, I just need to enforce more structure. Pump the PCs up a tier and throw some more stuff at them... it could be good.

+ Burning Wheel, possibly using the Harn world for geography to let me build the society more easily. Not sure about this one, I'll look into the system more.

+ 4e DnD, in the upcoming Dark Sun setting. The more I think about it, the more I think we should give it another go. Dark Sun is a great post-apocalyptic setting - but post-apocalyptic fantasy - and I love the grittiness, worship of the elements over gods, and the fact that magic use has consequences. I unknowingly played in the world, over telnet (!), on Armageddon before I even got into MMORPGS and tabletop games - and I really liked it. I miss the tactical combat options from 4e, positioning and power coordination don't seem to apply in other games we've played, and I think I've learned enough to try to skim over its (many) faults. We just need players to play their roles, which I think my current group will.

Controversial? Maybe. I'll run the idea past people while I'm blasting their fleets to dust tonight...

Thoughts??

The 1920’s pulp style comes through in spades, while presenting a real feeling of towering terror beyond comprehension, particularly the full page pieces and monster artwork. The tone was set for Savage Lovecraft.

Multipurpose purchase possibility: Battlestations!

Originally spotted when I was looking around for a board to play Starmada on, which it has, Battlestations is a pulp sci-fi RPG/boardgame hybrid that actually looks like it might fit our short-term filler-game needs as well...

Although we have the minis and whatever for fantasy RPGs, pulpy sci-fi has always appealed to me: whether Slipstream for Savage Worlds or Mindjammer for FATE, or whatever else. 15mm SF minis are readily available in the UK, and I'm planning a sci-fi(ish) setting for my own system when I ever actually get time to write stuff down, so why not go for it..?

Deadlands is still on the cards, and on hold, but the cardboard miniatures I downloaded seem to have gone down like a lead balloon with my group. Ah well.

Dave may well step in and continue his FantasyCraft campaign, which would be great as I'm itching to play something, but otherwise it looks like I may need to get something sorted for when we tire of blowing each other into space-junk...

I’ve since learned that it’s called “Basic” because a more complete “Advanced” version is forthcoming.

Despite the classic look and obvious homage to classic D&D, it’s definitely its own game. For example, combat is counted off in seconds, not rounds. That is, player turns happen by the second rather than by the round. This is kind of cool because it can resolve certain questions rather easily. For example, how far can I climb in a second? The GM and the player should be able to agree on that pretty easily. “Sure, you can get on the table, but not climb that wall.”

So your initiative roll indicates at which second you start. The GM counts up and you act when the count gets to your roll result. The interesting spin thereafter is that you can act any second after that. So if you start at the 5th second, you can act on the 6th second, the 7th and so on, even if that second is someone else’s turn. If I recall correctly, ties are resolved by some kind of initiative score. I can’t recall exactly. Weapon speed determines how quickly you can attack again and you can’t necessarily attack on each turn. For example, if your initiative is 7 and your weapon speed is 5, you can first attack on the 7th second, but can’t attack again with that weapon until 5 seconds later (i.e., the 12th turn).

There were other intricacies too, such as how one’s shield comes into play, etc. In general, it was a very detailed system and it seemed to involve a lot of book-keeping. It was a neat system, but easily as complex as D&D 3.5. The combat rules made a lot sense, but seemed to aim at being so realistic that they would result in a very slow game. Kenzer has free quick-start rules, so you can decide for yourself (although they seem more about character creation than actual play). I have come to believe that less is more (hence the appeal of Castles & Crusades), so I can’t imagine playing this game regularly, or buying the rule book for that matter. I certainly would be up for giving it another whirl at a convention again, though.

Next up was Savage Worlds by Pinnacle Entertainment Group. I’ve been curious about this game for a while. Their booth was in the dead center of the hall and had two very spiffy demo tables. I saddled up to one and asked if I could play.

The guy running the demo did a great job (I wish I could remember his name) and I was quickly knee-deep in a Savage Worlds: Deadlands scenario, my gunslinger rushing up a cliff face to save his lady love from evil cultists.

I skimmed the free Test Drive rules a year or so ago, so I had a basic understanding of the system. Instead of attribute scores, characters assign a die to each attribute (from a d4 to the d12), with the larger the die, the better score. You have to love that the forlorn d12 gets its due and is sort of the “18” of the game. Combat and task resolution are straight forward: you roll the appropriate skill, which is based on an attribute die, and if you beat the target number, you succeed. Typically a 4 or better is a success (naturally, various modifiers apply).

What makes the game mechanic fun is that major players in the game, that is player characters and heavy duty NPCs, are “Wild Cards” and therefore get to roll an extra d6 for just about any roll (except damage, I think). The player can pick the better of the two dice (they don’t add up). Also, there is an “exploding die” mechanic, so if you roll the highest number on a die, you get to keep rolling it, adding the rolls together. If you beat a target number by 4, you get a “raise,” and extra cool stuff can occur (depending on the purpose of the die roll).

All of this adds up to a damn fun mechanic. I guess that is what sets it apart. The Savage Worlds’ dice mechanic is simply fun. There is something about the wild die, the raises and the exploding dice that gives Savage Worlds an extra oomph that makes you eager to see what you roll.

I enjoyed the demo so much that I bought the Savage Worlds: Explorer Edition book (hell, it is only $10). I’ve been giving it a good read-through. In some ways, Savage Worlds feels a bit like a d20 game without the d20. For a game that is known for being simple, it has just as many modifiers and such as d20. I was particularly surprised that the rulebook repeatedly emphasizes that miniatures and a battle-mat should be used. That being said, there are no attacks of opportunities and nothing really seems to slow down combat to the extreme that d20 mechanics can.

Savage Worlds has garnered a strong following and I can see why. [Christina Stiles is working on “savaging” her SpirosBlaak d20 setting into a Savage World one.] I would love to run a campaign that would really put this RPG through its paces. Since it’s a universal system, I would love to run some kind of time traveling campaign in which the each PC is from whatever time period the players wish and then run them through scenarios in the past, present, and future. Anyhow, I highly recommend it.

One of the most of inventive settings of the last year is Ken Hite’s The Day After Ragnarok, which describes a world devastated after the Serpentfall, an event caused by the detonation of the Trinity Device within the brain of the Midguard Serpent, unleashed by Hitler in an attempt to initiate Götterdämmerung. Best summed up as “Mad Max meets Conan” or “Submachine Guns & Sorcery,” this alternate Earth of 1948 from Atomic Overmind Press is a rich and frothy pulp setting for which we are still waiting the definitive campaign from the illuminated mind of Ken Hite. We already have had a scenario – Tehran: Nest of Spies – and now we have a series of articles known as Serpent Scales: Fragments from the World After the Serpentfall.

Each of these articles is designed to focus on particular aspects of the weird new world of 1948 that though of interest to The Day After Ragnarok GM, are not quite worthy of a full supplement. They are thus of a varying length – the shortest of the first three available being only six pages long, while the longest is almost five times that length. This varied length is reflected in the price, but on length and price alone, these are not cheap PDFs. That said, when you consider that each is written by Ken Hite and that the series promises to deliver a consistent diet of content rather than fluff, paying that little bit extra is probably worth taking into consideration. As with the core book, all three supplements are available for both Shane Hensley’s Savage Worlds and HERO System.

The series starts out with as unpalatable a subject as you would imagine, but it definitely provides details of an enemy that you can get away with despising and not suffer any comeback for it. The New Konfederacy details the third rise of the Klu Klax Klan out of Atlanta following the Serpentfall and its founding of the Grand Kounty of Birmingham, Alabama following the conquest of “The Magic City” back in 1947. Now flying the “Stars and Bars” flag, the New Konfederacy is a bastion of law and order in the Poisoned Lands, even if that law and order comes with an alliance with Nazi ex-POWs, the re-establishment of America’s most peculiar institution, and labour battalions that work for food. Meanwhile, radio station WKKK broadcasts “Birmingham’s American Voice” a thousand miles in all directions serving up a diet of pro-white, anti-non-white, anti-non-Protestant, anti-Jewish, anti-Catholic, anti-Communist propaganda alongside good old Bible thumping sermons and wholesome Country Music. The radio station claim to be the voice of an “Invisible Empire” across ravaged America, complete with a million-man army, might be propaganda, but the reach of the new Klu Klux Khan is long enough, and that is before you take into account the various White Supremacy groups that have sprung up across of the Mayoralties in the wake of the Serpentfall.

Just as you would want, the article details the Klan’s organisational structure – komplete with silly names that begin with the latter “k,” its leaders and agendas, its rivals, and its secrets – not as many of those as you might think. These are supported with the stats for a Klan super agent (or is he?), an atypical White Supremacist night-rider (not always affiliated with the Klan, so without the “k”), the Klommando and the Klandestine Agent (which are affiliated with the Army of the New Konfederacy, so do come with the silly “k”), and lastly the Haint, true Confederate ghosts riding spectral horses, and the only supernatural element described in the article.

The article sees the return of Hite’s “Savage Shortlist,” a quick pick listing of the “Top Five” elements pertaining to the subject in hand. This time around, the Top Five are the “Top Five Klan Plans,” more specific aims than just enslaving and oppressing the right minorities for the good of America. Essentially each is reason enough for a scenario or two, if not a mini-campaign, and while each is just a thumbnail sketch, they are also good starting points. Also included are a set of tables to help a GM determine just how deep the Konfederacy’s influence might be in a town out in the Mayoralties. Of course, subverting every town out in the Mayoralties is part of The Big Klan Plan. The “Town Subversion Generator” is an extension of the detailed encounter tables to be found in the core book, and as the author makes clear can just as easily be used with any other organisation, be it the Reds or the snake cultists, with just a change of a term or name or two. Either way, the “Town Subversion Generator” is neat means by which to create an encounter or scenario with relatively little effort.

What is obvious from this Serpent Scales is the author’s distaste for the subject matter, and to be fair, I do not envy the research he had to do in order to write about The New Konfederacy, even if the author is having fun with the latter “k.” Even as Hite is describing a villain as crass and as odious as the new born Klu Klux Klan, he is also making suggestions as how they can be used, some of them surprisingly subtle in comparison to the Klan’s reputation. Despite sharing the author’s distaste, this is much to be taken from The New Konfederacy, especially if the GM is running a game set in Mayoralties.

The second article is entitled (Happiness is a) Sten Gun. At just six pages, this is the shortest of the three articles available, and as its title suggests, is devoted to the humble Sten Gun, the cheaply and easily manufactured submachine gun that was a symbol of British stubbornness and Resistance defiance in the face of Nazi oppression during World War II. While its durability and simple functionality earned a place in the hearts of all who used it, the Sten Gun also had a reputation for unreliability at the wrong moment. It might be that the SMG jammed at a crucial moment; that it discharged a round at if jarred or knocked badly; or that discharged the whole of the magazine in one go! That said, it could be highly effective and very reliable once a user had mastered the Sten Gun’s quirks. Lastly, a Sten Gun only has two machined parts, so it is possible to scavenge the remaining parts if you have to.

All this is covered and more in (Happiness is a) Sten Gun. It tells you where the Sten Gun might be found – throughout the British Commonwealth and anywhere that MI6 might be shipping the weapon to support an insurrection or the United Kingdom’s allies. If found in the USA, the likelihood is that it is somewhere near Toronto where they are manufactured for the standard 9mm Parabellum ammunition , or if nowhere near Canada, then guns have been adapted to a different calibre. What there is not in (Happiness is a) Sten Gun, is one of Hite’s superlative “Savage Shortlists,” but to be fair, there is hardly room for that in its six pages. Instead, there are rules for the SMG’s quirks and how to fix them to make it a really good gun, three scenario seeds (one including how to redo The Magnificent Seven with Sten Guns!), and lastly, a guide to give the Sten Gun a damned tune up. Essentially to make it a +1 Sten Gun of Serpent Slaying! Only with a bit more imagination...

The third and longest of the Serpent Scales articles adds a whole genre all its very own to the world of The Day After Ragnarok. Deep within the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere lies Bradbury Island or as the Japanese call it, Kaijūshima. Which just happens to translate as “Strange Beast” or “Monster” Island and “Monster Island” just happens to be part of title for Return to Monster Island, the title for the second Serpent Scales article. Kaijūshima is perhaps one of the strangest islands in the Pacific, being home to giant beasts, dinosaurs, and other strangeness all by the way of special effects by both Ray Harryhausen and Ishirō Honda.

Originally discovered by American whalers in the last century, but in Japanese hands since 1914, Kaijūshima is damned difficult to get to, and to get on to. Partly fortified (on the safe side of the island), remote, and protected by a surrounding natural boat bottom ripping coral reef, about the easiest way to get there is fly over and land by parachute. That or enlist in the Imperial Japanese Navy... Nevertheless, there are hooks aplenty to get the heroes there, whether it involves going after a missing mentor or girlfriend, being hit by a pterodactyl and forced to land, investigating Soviet interest in the island or just going to make a big damned movie, the heroes are going get there...

Once they do get there, Return to Monster Island comes with a “ready-to-play, throw the kitchen sink and its crockery at the players” scenario that lets them run a giant monster fight as their heroes run around underfoot! Actually, “Deploy All Monsters” is more of a Savage Scenario Starter, but in the hands of a good GM plugging in the other contents to be found in this Serpent Scales article, it should be hectic fun.

In addition to describing each of Kaijūshima’s major locations, each complete with suggestions as to what might be encountered there, Return to Monster Island lives up to its title and gives you monsters, or rather, daikaijū! Not just gigantically monstrous creatures native to the island, but also the creations and discoveries of the Soviet Institute for Genetics, and that is all before you get to the dinosaurs! And dinosaurs are so ubiquitous that you can put them anywhere as evidenced by the subject of this article’s “Savage Shortlist.” With “Top Five Places to Fight Dinosaurs” that takes you from Antarctica to China and from Africa to South America. As with every other “Savage Shortlist,” the five entries are quick and dirty, but that is in keeping with the “fast, furious, fun” ethos of Savage Worlds, and certainly much of the contents of Return to Monster Island plugs into those five entries.

Return to Monster Island pretty much wears its influences on its sleeve – or is that scales? – to present pulpy, two-fisted lost world action in the vein of Doug McClure and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Professor Challenger, Godzilla and King Kong, all richly spread over an island that is one part Skull Island and the other Ponape. Of the three Serpent Scales to date, it happens to be the most versatile, the most pulpy, and the least setting specific. Which means that you could take it and drop it into any pulp action setting you care to name – could one of the island’s volcanoes hide a fissure that if followed would lead you on a Hollow Earth Expedition? – which the author acknowledges by suggesting how Return to Monster Island can be dropped into other Savage Worlds settings, from Rippers and Realms of Cthulhu to Weird War II and Weird War: Tour of Darkness.

So the question is, after having looked at each of the Serpent Scales articles released so far, do I recommend that you rush out and buy them? As an unabashed fan of both Ken Hite and his The Day After Ragnarok, I would say absolutely, but then that would hardly be fair. Thus I need to give you a more considered answer. Well, as interesting as (Happiness is a) Sten Gun is and as much solid content as it contains, it really is only of minor interest when compared to the other two. Of those two, The New Konfederacy does a fine job of both presenting a set of villains that GM and players alike will love to hate and providing support for the GM running a campaign set in the Mayoralties, the Eastern third of the USA that is one of the major settings in The Day After Ragnarok. The likelihood is that the GM will get a great deal of long term use out of this Serpent Scales. It is not as good though, as Return to Monster Island, which not only gives a good pulpy adventure location for The Day After Ragnarok, but also for any pulp action setting; manages to tag more pulp references than the other two; and lastly, has the potential to be just plain more fun.
